Sermon Study and Biblical Analysis
1. The Great Creator Beyond All Human Philosophy and Achievement (John 1:1–5)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (John 1:1–3)
The Eternal Origin of the Word:
- The Apostle John begins with the cosmic origin of the universe rather than a human genealogy.
- The Word existed before the creation of the world as the sole source of creation .
- The stature of Jesus far surpasses the greatest historical figures or scientists .
The Sustainer of Daily Life:
- Pastor Kiêm shares his experience facing evolutionary philosophy denying God during his college years .
- The continuous beating of the human heart for decades is living proof of the Creator's sustaining grace .
- Humanity cannot create life or determine its own destiny.
2. From Distant Worship to the True Tabernacle Among Us (John 1:14)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
The Condescension of Jesus:
- The phrase "dwelt among us" literally means the Word pitched His tent and moved into the neighborhood of humanity .
- He did not stay far above, but stepped directly into human brokenness and suffering .
The True Tabernacle of God:
- In the Old Testament, God's presence was localized in the Tabernacle and the Temple .
- Jesus declared Himself to be the true Temple, the ultimate meeting place between God and humanity .
A Shift in Understanding God:
- Cultural traditions often view God as distant and impersonal, appeased only through rituals or offerings .
- The Gospel of John reveals that God actively sought us out and came to dwell among us in Jesus .
3. Human Rejection and the Illusion of Self-Salvation (John 1:10–13)
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12–13)
The Reality of Rejecting the Creator:
- The world was made through Him, yet humanity failed to recognize and receive Him .
- Sinful human nature flees from God, reaching out to Him only when hitting rock bottom .
- Pastor Kiêm shares his father's story of crying out to God during a storm at sea, illustrating this human instinct .
The Stronghold of Self-Salvation:
- People attempt self-salvation through money, education, status, or external image .
- All self-salvation efforts fail because humanity is powerless to save itself from sin .
The Right to Become Children of God:
- The status of being a child of God does not rest on bloodlines, human effort, or family heritage .
- The right to become children of God is a gift received purely by faith in Jesus.
Small Group Discussion Questions
Identifying Self-Reliance: In your daily life, are you relying on money, education, or family status for security instead of trusting in Jesus?
Discovering the Nearness of the Word: How does the truth that "Jesus moved into the neighborhood" change how you pray and talk with Him daily?
Relinquishing Self-Righteousness: John 1:12–13 teaches that becoming a child of God does not come from lineage or human effort. What area of personal pride is the Lord calling you to lay down this week?
