Title Lesson 2: The Lamb of God
Passage John 1:19-34
Speaker Pastor Kiêm Lê
Synopsis John the Baptist denies all personal titles to become a "voice crying in the wilderness," pointing directly to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Theological Objectives and Direction

  • Scriptural Objectives:

    • Understand John the Baptist's humility in renouncing personal titles to be a "voice crying in the wilderness."
    • Recognize Jesus as the Lamb of God who carries away the sin of the world throughout redemptive history, from the Old Testament to Revelation.
  • Cultural Context Objectives:

    • Shatter self-pride, the drive for personal recognition ("me, myself, and I"), and the pressure to maintain status or titles in church or society.
    • Awaken believers from superficial living, where attention is spent on entertainment, shopping, or social media rather than beholding Christ.
  • Goal:

    • Humbly serve and place Jesus Christ's complete lordship over every aspect of life.
    • Re-establish dedicated time for fellowship and beholding the majesty of the Lord.

Sermon Study and Biblical Analysis

1. Rejecting Self-Elevation and Religious Titles (John 1:19–28)

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." (John 1:19–20)

  • The Blindness of Formal Religion:

    • Pastor Kiêm opens with an anecdote about a passenger talking to actor Tom Cruise on an airplane without recognizing who he was .
    • Similarly, the priests and Levites held the law but failed to recognize the Messiah standing right in their midst .
  • Humbling Oneself to Exalt Christ:

    • John the Baptist rejected prestigious titles such as the Christ, Elijah, or the Prophet .
    • He saw himself merely as a "voice crying in the wilderness," reflecting the light rather than being the light .
  • Self-Elevation and Christ's Lordship:

    • Human nature gravitates toward being self-centered ("me, myself, and I") and seeking personal recognition .
    • Pride can hide subtly behind boasting about "my ministry" or "my church" .
    • Recalling a seminary professor's warning, Pastor Kiêm asks: Where is the lordship of Jesus Christ in our calling and service ?

2. Beholding the Lamb of God in Redemptive History (John 1:29–34)

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

  • Awestruck Wonder Before the Savior:

    • The word "Behold!" expresses awe and wonder as John the Baptist saw Jesus coming .
    • He introduced not merely a teacher, but the unique Lamb provided by God .
  • The Lamb Throughout the Old Testament:

    • In Exodus 12, the Passover lamb's blood protected God's people from judgment .
    • In Isaiah 53, the Messiah is pictured as a lamb led to the slaughter to bear sin .
    • A foundational spiritual principle: without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins .
  • The Eternally Reigning Lamb:

    • Jesus is the ultimate Passover Lamb, dying once for all humanity .
    • In Revelation 5:6, the slain Lamb is seen standing in the center of God's throne to rule the universe .

3. Awakening Minds Captured by the World (John 1:30–34)

"And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God." (John 1:34)

  • Imagination Captured by Worldly Wisdom:

    • Citing a theologian, the sermon notes that modern Christians often allow their imaginations to be captured by worldly standards rather than the beatific vision of Jesus .
    • We easily treat God's salvation as ordinary .
  • The Reality of Distracted Living:

    • Pastor Kiêm highlights a sobering reality: out of 24 hours daily, believers often give only a few brief minutes to prayer before meals or sleep .
    • Over 23 hours are consumed by sports, shopping, movies, and social media .
    • When our vision of Christ is eroded, our service and faith become ordinary .

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Identifying Self-Elevation: In daily work or church ministry, do you ever feel the pressure of status, building your own image, or seeking recognition rather than giving all glory to Christ?

  2. Discovering the Meaning of the Lamb: How does tracing the Lamb of God from the Passover to the throne in Revelation bring peace and hope when you face the weight of sin and fear?

  3. Surrendering Distractions: Facing the reality of spending hours on social media or entertainment while giving only minutes to God , what is capturing your mind? How will you re-establish Jesus' lordship in your daily routine this week?

Summary and Joint Prayer

  • Summary Guidance:

    • Silently examine your heart before God, acknowledging indifference, self-centeredness, and moments of robbing Christ of His glory .
    • Acknowledge human weakness and the need for God's grace.
  • Prayer Points:

    • Confess pride, title-seeking, and minds distracted by worldly pursuits.
    • Thank Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God who died in our place to remove all our sins.
    • Pray for the Holy Spirit to renew spiritual imagination, helping each believer live humbly as a "voice" and setting Jesus as Lord over daily life.
