Sermon Study and Biblical Analysis

1. The Fall of Worldly Idols and the Only Savior (John 1:35–42)

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. (John 1:35–37)

  • The Fall of Worldly Idols:

    • Pastor Kiêm opens with a memory from his youth idolizing martial arts icon Bruce Lee, practicing Taekwondo for six months before realizing he could never be Bruce Lee .
    • People often live vicariously through idols (actors, singers, superheroes) to project their desire for self-worth .
    • All earthly idols ultimately reveal human weakness, leaving us disillusioned and bitter .
    • Jesus alone is the great Savior who will never disappoint us .
  • An Invitation to Personal Experience:

    • John the Baptist actively points his disciples to Jesus: "Behold the Lamb of God!" .
    • When the disciples ask where He is staying, Jesus offers no abstract theory but invites them, "Come and see" .
    • This invitation calls you to enter into a personal experience with Christ rather than settling for head knowledge.

2. Spiritual Insight and the Confession of Christ's Identity (John 1:43–51)

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" (John 1:47–49)

  • The One Who Searches Hearts:

    • Nathanael was initially skeptical upon hearing that Jesus came from Nazareth .
    • Jesus demonstrates that He saw and understood Nathanael when he was under the fig tree, even before Philip called him .
    • He knows all thoughts, sincere motives, and quiet hidden corners of every person before we ever seek Him .
  • Confession and New Covenant:

    • Recognizing Jesus' omniscience, Nathanael immediately confesses Him as the Son of God and King of Israel .
    • Jesus promises that you will see greater things: heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man .
    • He is the true ladder bridging Earth and Heaven, the sole bridge restoring humanity into covenant with God.

3. The Cost of Following: Peeling Away Self and Walking Without Regret (John 1:43–51)

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me." (John 1:43)

  • Surrendering False Security to Be Disciples:

    • Following Jesus demands active commitment: leaving behind nets, boats, former careers, and old identities (fishermen, tax collectors) .
    • From 12 ordinary individuals, the Lord transformed them into fishers of men, laying the foundation for a Church of billions today .
  • The Process of Peeling the Onion of Self:

    • Pastor Kiêm compares following Jesus to peeling the layers of an onion .
    • The Lord progressively peels away self-righteous opinions, love of money, pride, selfishness, and hidden fears in your heart .
  • Real-World Discipleship Illustration:

    • Pastor Kiêm shares his 2002 decision to leave his engineering career at HP in Palo Alto to move to Chicago for seminary .
    • Despite warnings about freezing weather, difficult studies, and hardship, the pastor affirms after 24 years: there is not a single regret in surrendering everything to follow Jesus .

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Identifying Worldly Idols: In daily life, is there any model of success, status, or financial security that is usurping Jesus' priority in your mind?

  2. Discovering Christ's Omniscience: How does the detail of Jesus seeing Nathanael under the fig tree deepen your awareness that the Lord knows all your quiet, innermost thoughts?

  3. Peeling the Self and Restoring Obedience: Like peeling an onion, what layer of self-satisfaction or pride is the Holy Spirit asking you to let go of this week to faithfully follow the Lord?
