The Dead Shall Hear

Pastor Paul Phạm Sunday, October 18, 2026

Humanity continually operates under the fatal delusion that spiritual life can be self-generated through moral achievement, academic erudition, or meticulous religious observance. The confrontation in John 5:19-47 dismantles this autonomous self-deification by exposing the total depravity of souls who are spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. When challenged by religious authorities regarding His divine equality with the Father, Jesus does not retreat; He articulates the profound ontological unity of the Trinity, asserting that the Son exercises indivisible divine authority to both raise the dead and execute final judgment.

Spiritual resurrection is entirely monergistic—the corpse possesses no inherent capacity to awaken itself, but comes to eternal life solely when pierced by the uncreated voice of the Son of God. Tragic is the posture of those who search the Scriptures for self-justification while rejecting the very Christ to whom all revelation points. To refuse honor to the Son is to remain under eternal condemnation; but those who hear His sovereign voice pass immediately from spiritual death into indestructible, everlasting life.
